Zoe Bestel at Kings: Review
She even made time to be quickly interviewed by myself and Tom Armstrong on Alive 107.3fm before starting her performance, telling listeners all about her recent performance for royalty which resulted in Prince Charles describing her music as ‘haunting’ and going home with a signed Zoe Bestel album.
Playing for just over an hour, Zoe performed some of her older songs including a couple which had been updated and reworked. Her set also included many from her recent album (Prince Charles’ fave), Sir Lucas and the Moon. Her music was well suited to the laid back atmosphere of Kings, with the audience members totally captivated by her entire performance. Towards the end of the set, she covered Biffy Clyro’s Opposite and Dolly Parton’s Jolene, with the Biffy cover even bringing one audience member to tears (in a good way I’m sure!). I was particularly pleased to hear that cover again after hearing it at this year’s Eden Festival back in June. Both songs had Zoe’s unique take on them, and were almost unrecognisable unless listened to very closely.
After what had proved to be a lovely way to spend a Thursday evening, everyone walked out with smiles on their faces and looked genuinely pleased that they had made the trip to Kings.
As I described her on air during the break between sets, Zoe Bestel is consistently excellent and performs to the best of her ability every single time. She’s also sweet, modest and professional and is a real credit to this region.
