Thornhill Music Festival Returns for 4th Year
[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Now in its 4 year, the Thornhill Music Festival is back and will take place over the Bank Holiday weekend of the 29th April – 1st May 2016. Small Town Sounds managed to get a quick catch up with Nick Hamilton, one of the organisers, and asked him all about the event…
Explaining how the festival started off, he commented: “Our own band (The Lewis Hamilton Band) are in the lucky position of knowing many musicians across many genres, and after lengthy chats with the local landlords we decided to put on something similar to the established and successful Blues Festivals such as Shetland, Arbroath, Callander and in particular Montrose (we’ve played at all of them several times), where the bands are paid directly by the venues, but differing in that we wanted to broaden the musical scope. The Thornhill Music Festival was started by the band in 2013, and was seen as a one-off event. It proved so popular however, we decided to make it an annual one. We are aided most ably from fund-raising to venue negotiation, by Iain and Jim Renicks, and John Holroyd, our contacts in the town.“
The event benefits from being mostly free to attend, with stage timings designed so that visitors can wander around from venue to venue and can watch different bands.
“All events are free with the exception of the headliner, which so far have included Ryan Mcgarvey, Jo Harman, Aynsley Lister and this year, Danny Bryant. The Thornhill Inn, The Farmer Arms, The Buccleuch & Queensberry Arms Hotel, Thomas Tosh and the Bowling Club all signed up for this venture, which always takes place the first weekend in May, a Bank Holiday weekend. There will certainly be a mighty jam session or two, hosted by Lewis, and all bands are being paid directly by the venues involved and will have the chance to do some networking and shift some merch.“
The weekend will see local musicians like Barstow Bats, Redfish, The Stefan, Bad Reputation, Maxy Hogg, Kate Kyle, Elia Davidson and Against The Grain all featuring on the line-up. Many local music fans will already be aware of the Lewis Hamilton Band, who have gigged all over Dumfries & Galloway regularly for years, gaining much acclaim. Nick commented, “Our own band have had extensive experience with working in the live music industry and have given over 500 performances covering both venues and festivals, and we are currently one of the UK‘s hardest working Indie Blues trios. The Lewis Hamilton band has also released four of our bands own albums (the first winning the Scottish New Music Award for best blues recording in 2012), and in addition are responsible for the release of Jock’s Juke Joint Vols 1-3 which have had airplay by over 50 radio stations world-wide and exemplary reviews. Through this we have made many contacts within the music community/press and are well qualified to make this work.“
