Dreaming of Summer – 5 unique outdoor gig locations in Dumfries
You just can’t beat a bit of fresh air, can you?
With the dark nights drawing in, we’ve decided to try to warm you all up by thinking of some unique locations for music events in and around the vicinity of Dumfries during the nicer weather. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that summer 2019 will be as good as the one we’ve just had!
Why restrict gigs to indoor locations when we have all this history and nature around us? Here are 5 of our favourite outdoor locations that could be used for live music…
1. Lincluden Abbey
The historic Lincluden Abbey could the perfect live music venue. Most suitable for stripped back acoustic sets, the raised mound around the back of the abbey is the perfect place for a band to play their songs, whilst looking down onto a crowd basking in the summer sunshine. For a different experience, the Abbey could be used for early Autumn gigs – what could be better than wrapping up warm and listening to tunes in the autumn sunset?
2. The Sawmill at Mabie Forest
Anyone who has ever been a walk up Mabie Forest knows of the Sawmill. Whether it be a meeting place, picnic place or school trip, the sawmill is instantly recognisable. It could be the perfect place to return to nature in a secluded, serene environment listening to local bands showing off their skills. Make a family day of it by having hike, letting the kids play at the park then chilling out in the sawmill area with a picnic.
3. The Bandstand at Dock Park
Situated within the beautiful Dock Park in Dumfries is the bandstand that has been there since 1880. This is the ideal place for an evening gathering featuring a stripped back and laid-back showcase of local talent with no PA equipment, just the musical sounds of our small town! It’s a great place to take the family too, with the play park for the children only a stone’s throw away. You can also enjoy the picturesque walk along the banks of the River Nith or a refreshment at the Riverside Bar between acts. Local band Boneshaker recently performed successful a sun-soaked summer gig here – maybe it’s time for it to get used for this more often?
4. Deer Park, Whitesands
Known locally as the Deer Park (despite there being no deer to be seen) this is another beautiful setting for the whole family to enjoy some of our local talent. Situated along the bank of the River Nith with the picturesque caul in view, this would be an ideal place to host some acoustic sets. A short walk from the town centre and in view of the regional bus stop, anyone visiting the area would instantly spot the buzz happening over the water and want to come and join in.
5. Crichton Gardens
The Crichton grounds are pretty impressive, with arguably the most stunning and well-kept gardens in Dumfries. This spot would be the most amazing setting to host an outdoor acoustic music event. An ideal way to spend a chilled-out Sunday! There are ample places to sit and enjoy the surroundings and you could even call in at Neuros for lunch to round off your day.
