New Songwriting Course at Catstrand
Two well known musicians from the Stewarty, Ruari Barber-Fleming and Liam Russell, are running a 6-week songwriting course at CatStrand arts centre in New Galloway.
Having been involved in the music scene in the Stewartry for the past few years and with various bands and solo acts under their belts -Tiderays, Gracefell, Frozen Shores, Le Haggis to name a few- these guys know their stuff. Through the course they are hoping to introduce ideas for other young musicians to develop a song from start to finish, incorporating melody writing and rhythm as well as lyrics, through a creative and relaxed approach to the sessions whilst drawing on their own experience. The course is open to young people over the age of 12 years old.
Liam Russell explained, “Our songwriting workshops will offer an insight into the process of writing an original song. Ruari and I have been involved in many exciting musical projects around Dumfries and Galloway, and further afield, and are both avid songwriters. The workshops will strip down songs to their bare bones, looking at each component individually; structure, dynamics, lyrics etc; before bringing all of this together to write your own original masterpiece! If you have keen interest in music, need a creative outlet, or just want to have a go then this is for you. Our aim is to inspire!”
The Songwriting that Works..shops will start on 16th May 2018, running in two and three week blocks over May to July 2018. The sessions are free and run in CatStrand’s professional auditorium from 6-8pm on Wednesday evenings. Visit the Catstrand website or email Catstrand’s Youth Arts Coordinator at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information. Alternatively, you can head along for a jam on 16th May to find out more.
