Shawn James is a Chicago-born singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. His sound is a blend of blues, folk and soul music and his songs have been featured on American TV channels CBS and HBO. Most recently one of his tracks was featured in the Sony PlayStation trailer for the upcoming game, “The Last of Us 2”.

Shawn and his band The Shapeshifters are currently touring America and Europe, and will be stopping off in Dumfries as part of several UK dates during November.

With the help of Spoke Promotions who have arranged the gig, we have a very quick wee chat with Shawn himself…

Small Town Sounds: How is the tour going so far?

Shawn James: The tour is going incredible! Great turnouts and we’re getting to meet lots of good folks.

STS: What can the crowd expect from you and the band?

SJ: They can expect a passionate rowdy intense live performance!

STS: Are you looking forward to playing in Dumfries again after playing a solo show here in April earlier this year?

SJ: Absolutely, I had a great time earlier and can’t wait for everyone to meet/have fun with the band this time around.

STS: What is the weirdest thing that has happened this tour so far?

SJ: I jammed my finger into our sprinter and have had a bit of a rough time healing but it’s getting better. I wasn’t even drunk haha!

STS: What do you like most about Scotland ?

SJ: The people, scenery and the accent!

STS: Can the Dumfries crowd expect any surprises?

SJ: We’ve got a new fiddle player who’s incredible and I have a feeling you’ve never seen fiddle played like he does. It can definitely surprise some folks.

STS: Dumfries can’t wait to see you and the band, what separates you from any other bands?

SJ:  I would say how we put a lot of different genres into a new sound and also the performance..we go hard…

Daniel Gillespie of Spoke Promotions told us: I’m really looking forward to having Shawn come back to Dumfries and this time with his band. It’s going to be an incredible show and I urge people to come along and witness these extremely talented guys. I booked Shawn earlier in the year where he played a solo set and it was amazing to watch – he has so much raw emotion and that really comes through in his performance. It’s shaping up to be a great show, I’ve had people message the Facebook page from all over the country asking about tickets so I’m really looking forward to this. It will hopefully put Dumfries on the map just that little bit more, and both local support bands are great and worth coming down early to watch too.

Shawn James and The Shapeshifters will play The Venue in Dumfries on Sunday 19th November 2017. Support will be provided by local bands Karin and Tiderays. Tickets are £8 in advance (available at Barnstorm Records) or £10 on the door. Doors open at 7pm. To find out more about Shawn James and The Shapeshifters, check out the website here.
