Dumfries & Galloway musicians: Their plans for 2016
For my radio show, I asked local bands and solo artists to get in touch to tell me their plans for 2016. Thankfully, quite a few did and I thought it would be worth posting them all here. So here goes…
The Abstracts plan to record and release a full album and are currently looking to start recording soon. Their track ‘Stay’ will be released as a free download through their Facebook page as a thank you to everyone that has supported them over the past year. Details will be announced soon. A live video is currently being produced and will appear on a dedicated YouTube channel. Their next gig is at the Globe Inn on Sunday 24th January 2016 as part of the Wee Burns Supper where they will be playing many of their new songs for the first time. They have some local festivals lined up for the summer and are currently in talks with various people about playing in Carlisle, Edinburgh and Glasgow in the coming months.
Daz McCormick had a very busy 2015 and he will be performing next at The Venue on 13th February as part of SpokeFest 2 (tickets are available via Barnstorm or Daz directly). His album, “Message To Myself” is nearly finished with only 2 more songs to work on out of 10. He is planning more gigs with a full band and will be playing around Dumfries and in Glasgow in a few months time. To keep up to date, check out Daz McCormick’s Facebook page.
Gracefell are a new local band made up of Liam Russell, Morgan McConnell and Ruari Barber-Fleming. You may have seen them play recently at Wh? Not supporting The Abstracts on New Year’s Day.
Morgan said: “We are hoping to create a 3 demo EP within the next couple of months to give people a better idea of how diverse our music can be and the range of styles we touch on. This will feature our new demo ‘Clocks’ and two other tracks that are more upbeat. We feel we are ready to put our music out as we have established our sound. Over the past few months we have played some support slots around the area, we hope to keep doing these and reach as many people as possible and become a regular name on the Dumfries music scene. As one of the members lives in Edinburgh we hope to get a couple of gigs in the city. We have applied to a few festivals around the area such as Eden and Knockengorroch which we hope we will be successful in getting slots at but we know it is not easy for a relatively new band with not much material out there. However, the good thing about our local festivals is that local talent is very important to them.”
The Stefan plan to spend January and February putting some new songs together, and they are going to get a video done of their latest single, Judy’s Dancefloor which they plan to have filmed in The Venue and various other places around Dumfries. They plan to get back onto the live scene at the end of Feb/March.
Elia Davidson is another act who has had a busy year, and she seems to be gigging a lot these days! She has been busy writing some new songs and doing some recording and her next gig is at Wh? Not on the 31st of January at 4pm.
Barstow Bats have just finished recording their debut album which will be released in the first half of 2016. I predict that there will be an almighty album launch to go with it, but that hasn’t been confirmed yet…
Luciensghost were another band that launched themselves into the music scene in 2015, and they are currently making plans for 2016. They will be playing the ABC2 in Glasgow on Friday 19th February and they will be heading into the studio very soon. Check out their Facebook page for gig details.
Stereopod recently released a new track called Vic Morrow. They’re also planning a small run of CDs for their existing tracks, and they are planning to have a small change in direction to allow for the option of doing a live performance which is very exciting.
Cammy Black is currently still recording his first full album with the Sinking Ships (Russ McKenzie, Aymer Nelson and Craig Flint) and hopes to get it finished early this year.
Maxy Hogg launched himself back onto the live music scene in December 2015 after a year-long hiatus and 2016 will see him work on more of his own material. He has been confirmed to play at the Thomas Tosh as part of the Thornhill Music Festival on Friday 29th April.
Zoe Bestel will be a busy little lady in 2016, and she had this to say:
“First gig of the year kicks off on 4th February: Burnt Out Records have invited me to play at The Music Hub in Penicuik, it promises to be a great night as they’ve hosted past artists including: Nina Nesbitt and Karine Polwart.
Then I’m off on tour alongside international uke artist Mike Hind (from Bermuda) and Feckless & Fuddle (from England). We did a mini tour together last year and it was such a success that we’re visiting a lot more of the big uke communities around the country this time.
The dates are:
13 February – Otley, Yorkshire
14 February – Birmingham
15 February – Bristol
16 February – Taunton
17 February – Poole
19 February – Carlisle
Then on the 6-8th May I’m incredibly chuffed to be one of the headliners at the Ukulele Festival of Scotland. It’s the first uke festival to be held in Scotland and it’s going to be in Dumfries! It’s a world class event with artists coming from all over the world including: Canada, Bermuda, USA, Germany, Italy as well as many from the UK. More info: http://ukulelefestivalofscotland.co.uk/
I’m off to more uke fests during the year down in Winchester, Essex and London which I’m really looking forward to. Then nearer to home I’m playing in June at Solas Festival up north and at the Midsummer Festival here in D & G in Gatehouse of Fleet.
But the highlight of my year is at the end of May. I’m going to Orkney as I’ve been invited to play Orkney Folk Festival! Wanted to play there for such a long time, really looking forward to it. They asked me to play at last year’s festival but I was already booked for that date, so I’m so chuffed to be going this year!
More gigs are coming in all the time, so you can find out more details over at www.zoebestel.co.uk/shows to see if I’m playing near you.”
The Cracked Man are working on an album this year and have started doing a few video shorts as they progress. They hope to start releasing these under the title of “The Cracked Man Diaries” by the end of January 2016.
The Mind Sweepers will be releasing their debut single soon through Scottie Dog Records. It will be a double A-side featuring Mating Game and Away Wi’ Ye Wumman.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
