I would describe the sound as… Indie/Acoustic/Pop. The songs are lyrically and acoustically driven and often pretty intimate, but can be grown outwards to support more instrumentalists. Influences include David Gray, Glen Hansard, Sting, Gotye and Prides.
Background information… I’m a songwriter based in Glasgow, raised in Dumfries and Galloway. I used to be part of a band called Without Reason back in my high school years with peers of mine – we managed to play on the main stage at Eden Festival during our time, as well as working alongside John Dinning of Sound Travels to release our EP ‘Blinded’. Since then, I moved to Glasgow, graduated from The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, spent time co-producing a song writing project at Carnegie Hall in New York City in a juvenile justice setting and also undertook further training at Lincoln Centre Education New York. I was able to develop my teaching artist practice outside my performance practice, meaning I could develop the work I was doing with organisations including Paragon Music, Caroline Bowditch and Company, RCS Short Courses, Starcatchers and 21Common – mentoring people to write their own music as well as creating compositions for performances and dance.
Over the last year, I have been writing and developing the sound I want people to hear which has been extremely full on but equally rewarding. My music starts with the sound first, then lyrics and then finally reaching out to collaborators to have their say on it. It’s a really fun and humbling way to work, to include very accomplished players’ perspectives on the music – most of these musicians are from Dumfries and Galloway too. I am working with Thomas Brumby (Emma Gillespie, How We Got Giraffes) to record and release the music over the coming year. I recently performed at The Stove, The Brigend Theatre, sold-out the CCA Theatre in Glasgow and more gigs are to follow!
