Alex Maxwell

Alex MaxwellName of musician: Alex Maxwell

Location: Dumfries / Edinburgh

I would describe my music as… Indie-folk, the music ranges from upbeat finger picking folk ditties to full on indie-folk-rock-pop songs with hooky vocal lines for singalongs. Alex’s vocals are inspired by his favourite bands in the the Scottish indie scene; he is inspired by the energy and imagination from The Tallest Man on Earth, the punk rock sense of honesty from Frank Turner, the delivery from Villagers and Bright Eyes and the free flowing melodies of Vance Joy and Shakey Graves.

Background information: Starting from humble folk troubadour beginnings in Dumfries 2015, a hard working DIY ethic and driven determination to learn and improve songcraft and performance through the Edinburgh live music circuit led to a landmark 2017 which saw Alex championed as a BBC Introducing Artist and Scotsman/Scotland on Sunday ‘Artist to Watch’. The first single, The Want Comes in Waves’ has had repeated airplay on BBC Radio 6 Music through BBC Introducing, BBC Radio Scotland through Roddy Hart and Nicole Meighan and on Jim Gellatly’s Amazing Radio. Alex was featured as a Fresh Fave on Tom Robinson’s ‘Fresh On The Net’ and played five summer festival appearances at Electric Fields, Eden Festival, Kelburn Garden Party, Mugstock and Moniaive Folk Festival. Showcase performances at the BBC stage, Edinburgh Fringe and Dumfries Music Conference preceded the release of his first single. The December full band Voodoo Rooms EP launch was a near sell out.
Second single ‘Soul Divine’ features the Tinderbox String Quartet and was chosen as ‘Single of the Week’ on Janice Forsyth’s BBC Radio Scotland show and was Jim Gellatly’s ‘Track of the Day’.

Plans for 2019

Speaking of plans for 2019, Alex said: “I’ll be releasing my last single ‘Inaction’ (a more upbeat indie rock song I recorded recently with Rod from Idlewild, and D&G musicians with Liam Russell, Morgan McConnell and Robbie Huxtable) which will finish off the EP number 1 cycle. I’ll also be getting a full band going forward, which will lead me to releasing EP number 2 in 2019. I’m really hoping to put a few other singles out on top of that by 2020 so should be a big year!”
